Who will one day assume leadership roles in the cultural dynamic of Rijeka? The Benčić Youth Council is a group of young Rijekans who learn, influence, create, and experience many forms of art within the city. They discover and debate art and culture.

The project takes its name from and continues the energy generated by Preuzmimo Benčić (Take Back Benčić), an experimental film directed by artist Althea Thauberger, commissioned and co-organized by Musagetes with in-kind support from the City of Rijeka. The film brought together a cast of over 70 Rijekan children between the ages of 6 and 13. It tells the story of Benčić, the abandoned industrial complex that since the early 2000s has been designated as a space for developing creative industries. In the film the workers, frustrated by the decline of the buildings, re-skill in intangible industries and temporarily re-occupy the factory as artists. Of course, the story of the film was echoed by the children’s actual occupation of the space from Sept. 13 – Oct. 23, 2013, when they took over the building to create gestures, research, dance, music, and writing. During this time, they developed a strong relationship with the history and dynamic of the site. The council will continue to develop the relationship between future stakeholders of Benčić—youth and institutions—at a time when the future of this complex is still full of possibility.

The Benčić Youth Council is a framework for non-formal education that balances research, work, play, and socializing. The program is dedicated to learning different forms of art in the widest possible sense of the word: video, photography, dance, acting, heritage, drawing, sculpture, and more. 15 of the children involved in Preuzmimo Benčić will meet once every two weeks to work with local and international artists. Our forum is the cultural institutions of the city: the Rijeka Public Library, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the City Museum of Rijeka, the Maritime and Historical Museum of the Croatian Littoral, and others. The first session of the council will be held over a 5-day summer school from July 21-25, 2014. Titled By Railway, it will use the work of local artists Nadija Mustapić and Toni Meštrović as a starting point to explore the historical and symbolic implications of the rail system in Rijeka. Join us at the Bernardi Centre on July 25 at 13:00 for an exhibition of the sketchbooks the council will develop containing reflections, considerations, research, thoughts, emotions, moments, ephemera, pictures, and ideas gathered during this five day investigation into of Rijeka’s railways.

Musagetes is an international organization that makes the arts more central and meaningful in peoples’ lives, in our communities, and in our societies. We work in Guelph (CA), Lecce (IT), and Rijeka (HR) to demonstrate how art can be participatory and socially engaged to establish a greater sense of belonging in communities.

Tko će preuzeti vodeće uloge u kulturnoj dinamici grada Rijeke u budućnosti? Misija Vijeća mladih Benčić je suradnja i osnaženje djece kako bi učila, utjecala, kreirala i doživjela različite oblike umjetnosti i kulture u svojem gradu. Vijeće mladih Benčić biti će i neformalna savjetodavna grupa Grada Rijeke u domeni kulture i budućnosti lokaliteta Benčić.

Vijeće mladih Benčić nasljednik je projekta „Preuzmimo Benčić“ koji je osmišljen i izveden od strane kanadske umjetnice Althee Thauberger 2013. godine koji je bio financiran, također, od kanadske fondacije Musagetes i Grada Rijeke. Vijeće mladih Benčić iskoristiti će energiju i zalaganje za lokalitet Benčić tokom prošlog projekta kako bi se nastavila izgradnja odnosa između mladih, povijesti, samog lokaliteta i institucija koje će se useliti tamo kroz nekoliko godina. Cilj Vijeća je podignuti svijest djece o povijesti njihovog grada, jačanje njihovog osjećaja pripadnosti, brige za prošlost, te pružanje osnove za razmišljanje o budućnosti grada. Istovremeno dajemo im priliku za upoznavanje različitih oblika umjetnosti, za uključivanje u rad kulturnih institucija i korištenje njihovih resursa te za uključivanje njihovih mišljenja i interesa u kulturnu dinamiku grada. Vijeće će graditi odnose između budućih stanara Benčića i mladih tijekom ovog razdoblja kada je budućnost kompleksa još uvijek puna mogućnosti.

Vijeće mladih Benčić je okvir za neformalno obrazovanje unutar kojeg je ravnoteža između istraživanja, rada, igre i druženja. Projekt je otvoren svim vrstama i pravcima u umjetnosti. 15-ero djece iz prošlog projekta sudjelovati će svaka dva tjedna u radionicama s nacionalnim i međunarodnim umjetnicima. Suradnici na projektu su institucije s područja grada Rijeke: Grad Rijeka, Gradska knjižnica Rijeka, Muzej grada Rijeke, Državni arhiv Rijeka, Povijesni i pomorski muzej Hrvatskog primorja, i ostali.
Prvi ciklus radionica i aktivnosti u sklopu projekta Vijeće mladih Benčić otvaramo s Ljetnom školom pod nazivom „Željeznicom…“, (21.-25.07.2014.) koja će istražiti povijest i simboliku riječke željeznice.

Pridružite nam se na izložbi kreativnih dnevnika razvijenih tokom tjedan dana u kojima će biti sadržana razmišljanja, istraživanja, emocije, trenuci, slike i ideje djece, koje su bile razvijene tijekom petodnevne ljetne škole.

Ljetna škola će biti realizirana u partnerstvu s Muzejem moderne i suvremene umjetnosti, te u suradnji s Nadiiom Mustapić i Tonijem Meštrovićem, Odjelom za kulturu Grada Rijeke i institucijama Državni arhiv u Rijeci, Povijesni i pomorski muzej Hrvatskog primorja i Gradska knjižnica Rijeka.
