CAFKA (Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener and Area) and Musagetes are pleased to announce that Kimberly Drew will be the next speaker in the Big Ideas in Art and Culture lecture series. Please join us for her talk at the Walper Hotel in Kitchener on Saturday, June 3rd at 7 PM. Admission is free.

Kimberly Drew is the social media manager for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. She is the creator of the popular Tumblr blog “Black Contemporary Art,” a go-to source for news and work by black artists, and of the internationally recognized Instagram @museummammy, which boasts over 100,000 followers. A curator and organizer, her work focuses on bringing attention to black figures and voices in contemporary art.

Kimberly Drew also practices the art of the social media takeover. She has introduced the followers of the Fader’s Instagram account to the parties, art exhibitions, DJs, designers, curators, and directors of Art Basel Miami Beach. She has taken the WestHouse Hotel’s followers on a preview of the Frieze Art Fair, and she has taken over the White House’s Instagram account for the South by South Lawn festival, a cultural event hosted during the Obama administration, and an experience which she has described as “obscenely amazing.”

She is a cofounder of the Black Art Incubator, a “residency” program that aims to build and sustain public and community-driven practices around art and its existence in the wider world, and together with writer Jenna Wortham is working on Black Futures, a forthcoming project exploring black creativity.

Originally from Orange, New Jersey, Kimberley Drew graduated from Smith College with a B.A. in Art History and Africana Studies, and a concentration in Museum Studies. Prior to completing her degree she served an internship at the Studio Museum in Harlem.
